Learning Curve of College Students

Should these students know of The Clery Act and the namesake of the law?

Intruder follows someone into dorm and robs unlocked dorm rooms. No one was hurt.

This college is within city limits in a very busy section of town on a main road.

The question is rhetorical, if you are paying attention, you know the answer.

Please tell college student to lock their dorm rooms and be situationally aware. Your face may turn blue in trying to warn them.

The Clery Act.. what one life's death brought due to parents who advocated for positive change. Participate in your own campus safety.

Nightmares

I had a nightmare last night, but my conscious self woke me up knowing it was a dream. Most dreams do not stick with me. This one has.

I am sure it is a combination of concerns, conversations, and the news. The nightmare prompted this post because of something I briefly mentioned in my book about a missing college student.

First my dream: As I was walking along, I passed two people hanging out. I discerned in my dream, they were unsafe so I crossed the street after acknowledging them.  Green trees lined my new path. In my dream, I walked but also could look down upon myself. As my dream was coming to an end, so was my path. It narrowed and ended up at a concrete wall. It was not big enough to turn around. I could not climb up it as it was much higher than my reach. Could I get out or would someone find me?  I woke up before I could take any action in my dream and with concerns from my dreams still with me.

Sometimes our chosen paths lead us into living nightmares.

Doing deeper dives again on The Clery Act because of UVU, I am looking at different aspects of it to post. Some naive people have no idea of the teeth that The Clery Act holds.

If you read my book, you may have read the chapter on our connections to one another. It is not just Kevin Bacon to whom we are connected. If you have interactions with any human, we are connected. Sometimes our connections are not just direct or one off, but they are a lot less than six. I wrote about a tragic event of a missing college student in my book.

Did you ever wonder why the news can go viral when a college student goes missing? When someone goes missing, it is a nightmare.

Missing college student: I knew his grandparents. This link shows the time of 2021 when the video was made.  The young man died in 2006. Parents sued and won a settlement. Listen to the informstion on 2011 and 2012.

Examples of fines and a few short videos to research more to learn about your college campus or one near you. I live near several in my city.

Examples of colleges which received fines, not necessarily related to missing persons, but these are important to get a glimpse of how the world of college campus safety works.

Trending news: Three college campuses

Trending in the news now, besides UVU, is another college campus, Cornell University. Neither schools are getting accalades. Their reputations are in question because of crimes,  one death and one sexual assault case. Podcasters have caught on.

I believe The Clery Act will come into play. I heard a lawyer centered podcast this morning speak of Title IX. The two work together. There will be copy and paste links below.

Politicians are talking, be careful. They will use these opportunities to cloud the issues or to benefit themselves. AOC is out there.

This is a blog that tries to bring awareness on prevention. Lawsuits, legitimate,  factual, fictious. false, can be eyes and ears opening and informative. Discernment is important.

Lawsuits can be a dime a dozen. Someone is paying and sadly, it is not always the murderer or rapists. The victims pay and so do you.

Lawsuits brought under false information can damage worse than lawsuits that seek the truth. I know personally just how that works.

If you were ever a college student before these laws were enacted, you may think, "how did we survive?". I bet most of us never thought outside certain boxes. I am not sure I ever thought the college was not legally responsible for safety in the early '70s. I went to a college campus that was not free of crime. I never felt unsafe. That being said, one girl was raped, the freshman boys' dorm had constant fires, we had liquor at parties on a "dry" campus, and one fraternity got busted and ousted for drugs. We had no sororities at that time.

Below are links:

Since the top 10, Commandments that is, did not seem to be clear enough, there are now millions of laws. When they are broken, we all pay a price.

I show the links with a description because I like to know myself where the links take me.

Next up: Colleges responsibilities when students go missing. If you read my book, you have a clue to the next blog post.

Remember, warning people of danger is the law. The messengers are not always on top of the law. Then there are some messengers whom are just not believed. Listeners need to know the law besides "Though shalt not kill." The devil is in the details.

Discernment, rinse and repeat.

After Action Report UVU

UVU independent report after the shooting of CK on their campus is in a link below.

Paramount Tactical did a run down on it on Sunday night. Others have too. Do your own read. School violence prevention is a task for all.

It is about life and death.

This is not The Clery report that needs to be submitted for the 2025 year. Stay tuned for any other reports, including that one which is due October 1, 2026.

Copy and paste this link. UVU, if not already, will be talked about in tutorials in the near future.

OPEN Access

The roof, the roof, the roof.  The door, the door, the door. The window, the window, the window.

Open access. It could not happen here?

The murder of CK at UVU, will hopefully spark a Clery Act review if one is not already in progress. Hopefully, their Oct 1, 2026 report, required by The Clery Act, will advise why the inaccessable and monitored roof from where the shooter took aim had easy access on the day of the shooting. Their page 46 of the October 1, 2025 report advises of rooftops. The remains of the day on September 10, 2025 contradict the 2025 report published on Oct 1, 2025.

(The 2025 report did not include CK's shooting because reports are for the previous year.)

Paramount Tactical's visit to the campus late last year showed the easy access long after the shooting. The roof was more monitored then, but was still easy to get on.

These links are from October and November 2025. Many podcasters have taken interest in the CK murder. Paramount Tactical is only one example, but he seems to run a sensible one with interviews and documentation from onsite visits to UVU. He does say in the Oct 2025 example that he hoped  TPUSA would sue.  UVU has been given legal notice by TPUSA to indeed sue.

After the horse has left the barn, closing a door will not keep that horse from possible harm.

Some schools have learned the hard way when doors are not secured. There are so many reports of naive slip ups, intentional ignorance or negligence, I am not listing them here.

The Clery Act, in its name, points out one situation that was deadly. One death can change the law. If you have not read my book or other posts on The Clery Act, now might be a good time. It is not just about students.

I grew up in a city that had problems. It wasn't always that way. But, in my youth it was very troubled. We drew blinds at night and locked doors and windows. My parents were not naive. However, Christmas lights were stolen right off the decorated trees in our yard one year. There was a party inside. No one heard or noticed.

A murder happened just outside the city limits of Pittsburgh one night last week (September 2026). Although shootings and stabbings are not unusual here, this one has made national news due to the dead victim. It was in a suburb which has "All are welcome" and ADT signs often in the same yards. The murderer entered, per news reports, through an unlocked window. There is more to this sad story but this post is about access.

I discuss access often with family and friends. I legally work for the things I have so I have always locked windows and doors. Plus, I like my life. I am not going to make it easy for someone with ill intent.

I also try to be situationally aware of people who seem out of place or sounds that may signal danger.

Life is a participatory experience. I try to participate the best way I know how.

Participate in your own safety. It may help someone else also.

Sounds

What is a sound, song, spoken word etc that startles, scares, annoys, or evokes concern from you?

This is not a random question. Asking is important. What stirs your senses? It could be life saving. A screeching car or horn may actually mean danger. Look up!

Annoying and startling sounds to me are the loud bangs of the kneelers (like a bench for your knees) in Church. Peace is disrupted when the kneelers are knocked down accidently or without thought. Attend just one time at a Catholic service and you will know exactly what I mean.

Fireworks can be startling and the sound can be confusing. People will say "it sounded like fireworks" after a shooting. When I heard fireworks the other night near Market Square, I looked at my surroundings. Taking into account I live near a sports venue, I said, "The Pirates must have scored." The news, not known to me at the 7 pm time when I was walking through the area, reported that a stabbing had occurred in the Square less than 2 hours before. What sounds accompany a stabbing?

Songs generally bring good thoughts to my brain, but a song can trigger bad vibes as well. Most of us can place ourselves in the past when a song plays from an earlier time. Why is that?

The sound of crying children can be disturbing. Are they hurt, hungry, in a temper tantrum, lost, afraid or sad? Look around at the circumstsnces. ASK if help is needed. Asking saves kids. Gut feelings of concern can be life saving.

A statement that is annoying to me so much so that it is like screeching, scratching chalk on a blackboard. As the priest said at Mass today, now we call them whiteboards. Is the empty dry marker sound annoying? I digress. The statement is:

"We didn't think it could happen here."

That statement is annoying to at least one expert who does trainings on The Clery Act.

https://youtu.be/DpvxGLQnxG0?is=9FlM8dm085h_46tP

See, not a random thought. On common ground with paid experts. What did I know in 1998?

The Clery Act..Yesterday's News Impacts Today

Rinse and Repeat.

If you are a college student, staff member, community member living near a college campus, parent, a high school student excited about the prospect of enrolling in higher education classes, you have consumer rights.

Many pay very high tuitions and expect nothing from the staff at institutions of higher learning. Cancelled classes are fun, but cost you money each time. Crimes on campus are always costly. Reputations, lawsuits, fines, injuries, deaths: what you do not know about your college campus could kill you.

Crimes on or near campus and you were not notified? You did not consider campus safety when applying? You think the CK murder is a great conspiracy and UVU is not responsible for campus safety, only CK's team of private security needed to be proactive?

Think and think again.

Colleges who did not think about some aspects of the Clery Act have reputations ruined or tarnished and cost you money. Where do you think the fine money comes from or the money to defend and settle lawsuits?

You may want to learn what killed Jeanne Clery in 1986.  You also may not want to prop open doors for easy access to anyone. ( We propped open doors in the the 1970's also.)

This video explains information about Jeanne Clery. The parents of Jeanne Clery advocated for legal changes for campus safety and also filed a lawsuit against Lehigh University. Their settlement per information was not made public.

https://youtu.be/ablTHjQC4Pk?is=sY3CokeHHBhtQxcf

The lawsuit against UVU is not unusal, it is the norm.

In November 2026, the public can participate in revisions via commentary to The Clery Act. This is codified law. The Clery Act is not just about notifications. It is binding legal requirements for colleges which receive federal money.

The copy and paste link is listed.

Understanding the Clery Act Rulemaking Process https://share.google/pVQKlHFEIehjhFOFV

Let CK's death on a college campus be a starting point for you. Regardless of the "who dun it" scenarios, the alleged shooter acting alone or "CO and company" take on his death on September 10, 2025, a college campus allowed easy access to a rooftop which, per their info submitted for The Clery Act for the years preceeding 2025, the rooftops "were not accessable." Somebody skipped a beat, and CK's heart stopped beating as a result of a gun shot from a rooftop at UVU.

ASK about The Clery Act on your campus. What you do know could save a life.

Clery Act fines, not nickels and dimes

Updated: September 23, 2026

Added this copy and paste link of the 2025 report for Clery Act compliance from UVU.

Page 46 of 99 on Campus Security and Access is interesting. This does not include Sept 10, 2025 since reporting is a year behind.

Look at campus roof access per the report.

Is anyone asking questions about The Clery Act, now?

This is the another link. Colleges do get fined. Hopefully, it will impact UVU.

Clery Act, UVU and talking heads

With the many pundits lending their voices about the death of CK, the lawsuit against UVU by CK's family has brought up more discussions. However, more talk on these shows is about CO at times then about CK. The non practicing lawyers like to talk too.

I listen closely for these two words, The Clery Act.  Some changes were made to strengthen it for consumer protection after Virginia Tech. Do you know about Virginia Tech or Lehigh University? If not:

Do a deep dive on The Clery Act. It was as a result of a campus murder. Her last name is Clery.

I bet CK knew of it, if not, his ignorance did not help him. He spoke on college campuses.

Below are a YT training video and an anniversary video of 25 years. That was 11 years ago.

Can you hear us now?

After the June school shooting, the Philippines community was quick to blame America. Now after this third shooting, also one garnering international attention, is America still to blame or is it something else?

For years, the wringing of hands started by being explained away as due to " white male supremacists" and gun ownership, but those are myths. How do you explain gang violence, school shootings, or murder in every country?

Why do people kill? Since Cain and Abel, the story is as old as time and answers can be illusive. Yesterday crucifixtion, today guns, tomorrow, will it be "Hal"?

Do we stop trying because humans can be cruel  and there is nothing we can do? Do we get opportunities to help before recovery? How about the starfish or beached whale that still has a chance if sent back into the ocean.? Do people sit and watch death happen?

The Philippines is experiencing what we experienced in 1996-1997. The frog is slowly boiling in the Philippines as we were before Columbine in 1999.

The kid, per the initial reports (less than 72 hours) indicates that he paid attention to the dark web of true crimes which does glorify school shooters . Any other reports? As did the Columbine shooters, evidently friends were warned of something happening in the afternoon and passed it off. Were adults feeding the beast?

This is 2026, the horse left the barn, the genie is out of the bottle and Pandora opened that box ions ago. What do school districts do now in the Philippines? Do they have to start from scratch and reinvent wheels?  They do not really need to.

Billions of dollars in training may be needed for drills before clean up of blood spills. That protocol needs to be practiced, but do we have ears to hear?

Think about it, what puzzle piece did the kids miss per reports?

DepEd chief: ‘We are really not prepared for these shootings’ https://share.google/pPAFSS9m2pZ6keX4G

The Phillipines can not blame America, one shooting, maybe, is a shock. But three is a pattern that belongs to them.

Pray for our schools that someone will speak up, and that the warning is heeded and not self reported only in the rescue stage.

Every child, troubled or not, has a voice. Listen.

God is heard in the whispers. Sometimes the messengers are young.

Did the shooter give a clue hoping to be stopped?

Romancing violence helps in a very limited way.  Fletcher will be forgotten over time by most of us, unless we take seriously what is stated at the end of the last video.

I will never forget Shannon Wright. I wrote because of her in 1998. I will never stop writing. Remember, it is not the weapon of choice we are battling.

As a Catholic who lives in a city where a synagogue was the scene of a massacre, I know with one degree of separation how evil strikes out during religious services. Many faith communities know it first hand.

The children were in prayer as a person says in the first video. Evil hates children. Jesus warned the women from the Cross. Mary wept.

Mary reached out to the children at Fatima to deliver messages, per Catholic faith. Some did not take kindly to the children, even those in their own homes. We remember them today, over one hundred years later.

Maybe we can listen to the voice of Fletcher through his room and remember him. He had a journal too.

What is in your child's journal? Who is speaking to your children?

In 1998, I stepped away from my classroom, but not the proverbial desk.

What makes you step away from your work?

The Anger Stage of Grief

A campus shooting, no matter how you feel about the victim, even if this death was due to the grand theory out there, questions on campus security need to be asked. If the theories on the grand scale hold any water, then ask, ask, ask. If there are holes, ask anyway.

After a period of mourning, which is always difficult when the death of a loved one is surrounded by controvesy, the head starts to clear as the heart heals.

In a civil society, lawsuits, not vengeance, are filed to seek answers. I am not sure why it took a year, but finally, questions are being asked, in legal formality, by TPUSA, about the shooting on the campus of UVU.

I was posting in podcasters' chats about the university's culpability last year. If you have the slightest knowledge on prevention when a lightening rod comes to town and complete failure to protect happens, you would ask to.

You do understand the university's job was also to protect their students, staff and the university's integrity?

I will post several links, some are news, some are podcasters. I hope this goes to a televised civil trial with no confidentiality agreements.

Now that the alledged shooter is heading to trial, more information will come out. The victim held celebrity status but the shooting was on a public university campus.

The reports state that the former University President resigned. Why was she dancing?

This story is not going away. Is CK the grain of wheat that had to fall to the ground? Regardless of how you interpret his life, he is more famous in death then when alive. The alledged shooter failed to silence his voice.

The university administration failed in protecting CK and their campus. I wonder how the donors are feeling now?

FERPA and the Clery Act may be headlining again. How about all the laws on school safety, will we get a refresher course?

Art imitates life in Law and Order

When television started the "tributes" to the school shootings, I was angry. Why was television glorifying the anguish of students? Technically, I guess these are dramatizations.

My news feed in YT, due to Google knowing just about everything about us, sent me a Law and Order 10 minute summary of one episode about the trial phase of a school shooter. In the show, a former colleague in the prosecutors' department was defending the shooter as a private attorney.

I googled and found other 10 minute summaries of similar episodes. Included below are two.

How do the scenes measure up to real life?

In the first 10 minute summary, the attack has already occurred? Is it rescue or recovery?

Why was the one character surprised that her suspect was not white? Are school shootings limited to one sex and race? Think before you answer. Was the young female character correct? What pieces was she assembling? Who was the shooter? How did other characters respond?

Does this episode get FERPA or informing police correct after a shooting? Why is the defendent's lawyer wrong?

What was the reason the lawyer gave for the first suspect running?  Would you run if a policeman came up to you?

Why did the second suspect run?

https://youtu.be/6TiYF1IoF04?is=km8TGBk-BnSvI3EO

In this second link, what phase is portrayed: prevention, intervention, rescue, recover, all or a combination.  The title says Race to Uncover Potential School Attacker. Who is the attacker? Usual suspect? What is a rubber room? Righteous anger versus violence and vengeance? Were the detectives successful in intervention? Who is the red haired, white woman?

https://youtu.be/pNmaNQs6kTY?is=krYVNlagSODaaqFb

How can these episodes help in prevention, if at all? These are hard to watch, but not as hard as the "life imitating art" school shootings.

What is public behavior versus school records? Are threats protected speech?

Next up, an update on the CK murder. Who is in the line of lawsuits now? Criminal or civil?

Cameras

Cameras held by human hands will flock to a crime scene. Note any crime investigation, especially after a school shooting. Do those cameras help solve the crime?

As I was listening to some of the testimony at a Senate hearing of Kash Patel today, I heard part of the discussion on Flock cameras. Flock cameras, a brand name, are controversial. In a free country, the monitoring of our lives should be controversial.

Do you want a Flock camera in your house? How about ouside it? How do they help? How are they intrusive?

Kash Patel did mention a school shooting which occurred at Brown University. He said the university's cameras were not good. What else did he say? How did the Flock cameras get used? Senator Cornyn wanted some answers on Flock, his part of the questionning begins at 1 hour 53 minutes into the testimony during the morning session. There are many links to find.

Kash Patel advised there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in public. He said the Flock cameras got a license plate of the shooter at Brown enabling apprehension and has been successful in chasing down child predators.

The FBI is called in on school shootings, not the CIA. Flock cameras, like the agencies, can be used for good or for evil.  Do you want to ban positive uses?

School districts are trending on blocking cell phones in schools. Cell phones can be distractions. Cell phone cameras have also aided in getting to facts on some famous crime scenes. Students often record when on lock down.

In a world in which our cell phones are our individual "flock camera", is it pointless to ask about privacy? There is no right to privacy in the  public and contrary to school district or public university administrations, behavior in a public school is not private. So why do they delay in giving access to school cameras after a crime?

Where are the cameras in schools? Who is monitoring them? Mothers and Fathers actively monitor the cameras in their children's rooms. They can prevent tragedy. What can school campuses learn from that example? Who is monitoring the cameras? Yes, asking again?

If there is a Flock camera outside the Federal Courthouse Building at an intersection in my city, last night it may have caught a near miss for me as I was at a busy intersection. If I had been hit by the car that was forced to swerve and almost hit me, the driver of the car that forced the near  miss would be apprehended. PS, no one flocked to ask if I was ok. I publicly thanked God, though, for my guardian angel. No one was hit ot hurt, just thankful.

I sit and write at times during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Today on the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, I started this post. Many of my editorials for the newspapers in New Jersey were written as I sat in Our Lady of Sorrows Church during Adoration.

I know God sees the bigger picture, even if cameras do not.

Rewarded

after a shooting?

Safety is always the top priority, especially after a shooting.

No one was hit, but everyone pays. Someone dies, the narrative is predictable.

Link posted twice, the lessons need to be repeated.

An expert does the count: I have posted his links before. He is now an expert, retired policeman. He says pay attention. So do I but some people thought the worst of me for it. Do you?

It did not take much time for these grants to be awarded. Live, during game annoucement, he never expected it to happen? I know I am jaded with all this but "didn't expect it to happen",  where has this announcer lived?  In another link, a mother describes the situation. An administrator uses a talking point, stated after all shootings.

Extra note: Today is the one year anniversary of the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The university is taking extra precautions with tight security today which they did not do on September 10, 2025. I will have to do some research on their reward for being so careless 365 days ago.

The alleged shooter will go to trial, it could take years.

Child Assault Prevention A Mother's Club

When does it start?

I did not watch the Lyndsay Clancy trial, but I do not live under the proverbial rock when it comes to the trial.

Just as in any horrific crime, theories abound. Be discerning. Influencers can be dangerous.

I do listen to Brian Entin, a reporter, as he follows real life crime dramas and real life soap operas. He is thorough, calm and his interviews are informative.

The link below has a short review of the trial and an interview with a woman who sought help before killing her kids. He also references a "Lindsay Clancey copycat" murder of a two year old by his mother in Illinois. This mother also has a strong defense team. Recovery, no rescue occurred.

https://youtu.be/ayQC0Sz8wcQ?is=w_UFxKWWq1Y_Q6Yp

Is this a new type of "mother's club" getting media attention?

The women who wear pink for Planned Parenthood maybe some of the same people who took bizarre stances during the trial.

The one hold out juror is being demonized. Why?

Why do people celebrate the death of babies in and out of the womb?

Not guilty by reason of insanity or guilty knowing full well what she did? The jury could not reach a unanimous decision in the Lindsay Clancy trial. The mother has a second chance, the children did not get the same due process.

When does child assault prevention begin in a nation that celebrates abortion?

What are we teaching our children when the lines are crossed?

Schoolyard killers have intrusive thoughts also. Will mothers with intrusive thoughts hurt your children? The slope is slippery.

Did you read the story in my book about a woman who entered a school in Illinois in 1988?

Evidently, the medical field missed something in the Lindsay Clancey case as is the case in school shootings.

The mother in this interview is brave. She sought help and is willing to share her story. Maybe someone will seek help because of her story. She talks about trusted friends. Trusted friends will not ignore, cover up or not offer help.

Insane people who kill have mitigating circumstances. Did the lawyers purposely raise the doubt? Did due process take a hit?

Insane people do go to jail.

Is the healthcare field culpable?

Is there a mother out there who can not relate at some level to all of this?

ASK..asking saves kids.

Teachers have a say:

in Iowa.

This law went into effect on July 1, 2026.

Sometimes a brief news reports takes us to do a deeper dive. Yesterdays news, 2024, has an impact today, 2026. Was the shooting a wake up call to do better?

There ought to be a law. Do you think I would have had more support in 1998 if this law had been in place?

School protest: I do not agree with advocating for new gun laws, but I do support the right to be heard.  There was a school shooting at their high school. Some thoughts from the town's people and reporters.

When do we pray?

When are teachers and students heard?

Would a new gun law have prevented the shooting?

Do you choose prevention. intervention, rescue or recovery?

Life has some curves and Happy Labor Day

 Today's ride continued.

As we rode the Curve today, I took a video. It did not post! A Youtube video helps out with a live feed.

Sometimes the straightest path will not get you where you want to go. So when a few curve balls are thrown at you, think of the hard work Irish immigrants put in to get us a better ride! Handle the curves and see where they take you.

My one photo!

I will meet you at the station

This blog will be a little different than my usual ones but since I write about connecting dots, this one fits right in.

I love trains, so I am on one now to visit a friend and my sister. Walking, buses, and trains are my primary means of transportation. I take Uber, as needed, since I have not owned a car since 2013.

Today I am sitting in coach but I do like business class due to a few advantages. One reason being, it is close to the cafe car! Today, no cafe car for me. I already had my coffee!

I met my friend, with whom I am visiting today,  on this very train. We started talking in the station on one of my trips at least 4 years ago. She would come to the city to visit her daughter. That day she was heading home as I was heading to NJ to visit my son. We made a connection and talked the whole time. We have visited several times, even once in the Outer Banks. This is my second trip to her neck of the woods. We have met each other's dynamic children! Yes, we are joyful parents of adults who are now as old as we are. (See below to figure that math.)

The ride is lovely from the city east to NYC. I disembark about half way for this journey. I love the city but the rural communities have a peaceful ambiance from my window view. This train goes right past my sister's street in our city and around the world famous Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pa as part of this journey. Man can accomplish herculian tasks! Read about or ask your AI friend about that labor intensive project.

After a wicked night of storms, the day is gloriously sunny! The train actually stops at towns which experienced some damage last night. As we travel east, there maybe more clouds.

I already spoke with Jeff in the station as we waited to board. He lives in the city too but is going home to visit family who still live in one of the smaller towns along the way. He was a coal miner, but work is unsteady, so he changed jobs. We all adapt don't we? We got alot in to talk about in a short time. He is 60, I told him I had 10 plus years on him. He complimented me. I said I am 39 in Jack Benny years! This is his first train ride.

A family of four are going to NYC for the weekend. The young adults know now, but it is a surprise trip too see the Broadway show, Wicked. Everyone in that family talked!

The couple seated near me allowed me to take a picture of the back of the man's shirt. It is a favorite place of my son's! I hope I can upload it! They are headed to Philly.

In my city, nebby means nosey. But none of us were being nebby (Yes, an old lady, who judged me by the color of my skin, called me that one day.  We were at a bus stop. I bought myself a Nebby mug.) On this train ride, we were making connections and helping each other.

The train is sold out, so a women is seated next to me. She got on at our first stop. We laughed. She reached for a seatbelt. I could relate, for some reason, I reached to buckle up today. There are no seatbelts on trains. We are both on our phones and she is knitting also. She gets off a stop before I do.

How do I know so much about the people?

We all asked simple questions. Is this a line? Is it for coach? Is this the end of line? Is this seat taken? Friendly people make life sweeter.

A family with kids just boarded. The mom asked if someone would trade seats. The person said yes. The train is packed. The little girl is asking her mom many questions!

Even the conductor has to ask questions of course! The conductor thanked the person who moved.

There is a certain level of trust too on a train as we leave our bags to hit the restroom or bounce our way to the cafe car! Sometimes, we have to ask if "I can scoot past you?" to get to the aisle, if in a window seat.

ASK.. it does a lot for your a spirit! You never know if you don't ask!

I met a stranger on this train one day who is now a dear friend. We talked in the station. She asked as we boarded, Do you mind if I sit with you? Thank goodness, I responded, Yes!

My friend will be meeting me today at her station!

Love,

Marian

He is dead

September 3 at Westwood Hills Elementary School is a day that will be forgotten by most. But yesterday, a forced entry and two shooting occurred. Yes, two.

The news uses "they" to identify one injured teacher. "They" is plural.  Confusing use of pronoun in a very serious situation. PC anyone? Did the news mean the shooter also with the use of "they"?

Luckily, not a physically life threatening injury to the teacher. Do some follow up on that concept.

Per the shooter: The police say "no longer a threat" meaning dead. PC anyone or something else? Again, talking points on sheets of paper.

I will give 72 hour rule but question early. The Superintendent was visibly shaken as can be expected. He did seem sincere and scared.

It appears lock down protocol was observed and police called. This still  got to the recovery stage with one dead body.

It is only September. Are you ASKing at your school.

A reflection:

So many channels carried this news, even David Muir led with it.

If there has been a close call or worse, like this event, are you asking follow up questions. Are you satisfied with the answers or is it easier not to ASK. Even if it was last year, ASK.

As Dr. Stephens said years ago, "it is not if, it is when".

Check the websites and social media of your schools. Check board meetings and the minutes.
