The 72 hour rule does apply when trying to discern information to get clarity from resources and of the facts. After a violent attack at a school, it is important to pay attention to the first news conferences. The authorities are restricted in what they can disclose during an active investigation. But, their presentations early on can be very telling. Compare and contrast to updates, if there are any.
Evidently this was a serious enough event to hold a news conference. Many local news sources covered it. Even if you are not a fan of MSM, be thankful reporters ask questions. Fake or not, let them ASK. I am not a fan of shutting down reporters even if I do not like the corporation. I did not find videos from national networks.
In this case, is it prevention, intervention, rescue or recovery? Who were the rescuers?
El Paso is a large city, therefore, many news stations showed up to cover the story. Listen to statements and to the follow up questions and to the responses. Notice the page turning and the reading of the statements by the authorities and the "off the cuff" answers.
The knife attack took place on school grounds, but not in the building. Only four students were involved per the news reports.

Listen, pay attention. If school safety is the top priority then open and honest discussions are a must.

I do not remember recess as a child, but I do remember it as a teacher. I did understand that children need to "get up and dance", which is one reason, seasoned, "straight row teachers" called my first classroom with work stations, "organized chaos". It took time, and plenty of it, to organize that "chaos". Please do not associate the chaos created in school violence with my teaching style. The children had fun and were controlled for discipline and focus. Truly, turning the lights out for attention worked well. Only one time did I fail to get the eyes and ears in an acceptable, professional manner. I uttered "shut up", a moment that makes me cringe even today.
I considered my room quite organized, and not chaotic, but movement driven by skills and interest levels. Upon arriving in my class on her first day, and my first day as a first grade teacher, Jennifer M. (last name I still remember), looked at inherited toys on the shelf aa "baby toys". I spent a lot of money (too much) on school supplies after that comment. I could have saved for a mortgage!
But movement about a classroom is neither recess or physical education, so my students still needed the schedules for gross motor moving and unstructed play.
To think today, in an organized adult work place, adults get punished for getting up from their desks. No more than 30 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes of break ( adult recess) per day. Exceed the average per month, and the "watchers" get upset and monitor your every locked screen.
Are they the same people who took away physical ed or recess?
Now per the article and documentary teasers in the links below, if you take away recess, you maybe breaking a law. Recess, they say, improves the mental health of students. Would more recess factor into safer schools?
I liked other forms of time outs, so I do not think I would have broken any recess law. I did not think birthday treats were legally driven but boy did I catch holy hell for thinking that they were a treat, not guaranteed. One violent child and one very spoiled child in a class can lead to consequences imposed on the teacher. Sometimes, taking away recess seemed to make the most sense. Cupcakes to some are mandatory, but I digress.
We all need to move. Recess is generally for kids, but depending on the kids, it can be stressful for the adults. It was at recess that JT told at least one other child that he had a gun with him. Who is JT? Check out other blog posts on the Newport News school.
Recess was not an easy time with my student in 1998. I heard through former colleagues that my favorite Pipa took to having the kids walk during recess due to behavioral issues at recess not due to any particulat student. In 1998, that new, large school with everything smaller even impacted recess. The playgrounds were tiny.
Recess is unorganized, but supervised free time. It can be chaotic with 30 to 60 kids on the playground with only 2 pairs of eyes watching. The best scenarios involve children running, jumping, playing hopscotch, or jumping rope. Double dutch, anyone? Kickball? Swings and monkey bars are fun, well, until someone gets hurt. Then a new law gets requested or someone gets sued. Remember dodgeball?
My last year of teaching, the other second grade teacher in our small school often took recess away and used it for more academic time. A first grade teacher also did the same thing. I thought they were wrong. Rainy day recess made it painfully obvious that outside, free play recess worked best (as long as the temperature was above 32 degrees fahrenheit and not scorching heat! Today, add in air quality alerts!) I understood movement! The kids needed a break.
Some began to think that there ought to be a law to bring back, improve or protect recess. Do you ever wonder why I tell perspective teachers to get a law degree before certification?

Physical education, once a daily occurence, took cuts over the years. It was maybe twice a week when I was still teaching. Now some schools only offer it once a week. Recess is a tricky way of getting around the time guidelines and laws for phyical fitness. Is JFK rolling over in his grave?

Some people have very negative views of public education with good reason, with beauracy and political activism. If we could get back to basics of actually educating children both academically and physically can there be positive change? My book is anecdotal, you can agree with me or not. I do not give legal advice and I am not an expert.
BUT
Those who are experts in law and order do recommend what I did. Have you read The Gift of Fear by a security expert? The administration in my case got it wrong with retaliation against me. Some moving parts they took seriously and got right.
So, I have included in this blog edition "expert advice". Sandy Hook Promise came out of the deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. Whether you believe it was a staged event or real, one way or the other, crimes were committed. At what stage could it have been stopped. Even staged events are crimes and somebody knows.
I do not agree with the gun control narrative to blame the gun or punish all gun owners. This is America. Did you know guns helped against the British? It was not just a tea party.
As in Newport News in 2023 and, two days ago, in South Carolina, two mothers (one convicted and received jail time; one facing jail time if convicted) have been held accountable for their 6 year old children bringing the mother's gun to school. They are not white supremacists either.
So hold the individuals who break the law accountable, not every gun owner. Do you want your car or license taken because your "six degrees of separation neighbor" caused death on the Garden State Parkway? ( See other posts).
Sandy Hook Promise has a report line. Use it when needed. This brief review talks about trusted adults. That is a key ingredient in child assault prevention of any kind.
I look at the news reports on school shootings and see patterns. This study (probably very expensive) in the link below also looked at news reports of school shootings, averted and completed, then performed statistical analysis.
Their take: leakage of information helps avert the tragedy.
My take has always been: Someone gets a piece of the puzzle to share. SPEAK UP if they pretend not to hear you.
Their take: Grievance against someone or a group is the most common reason for the vengeance.
My take: When parents speak about their teachers being the "B word" and out to get the child, pay attention. Vengeful people are not your friend.

"It is not over 'til the fat lady sings". If you think this year will have some fat lady on stage, singing about the end of schools having to deal with these issues, wake up! This is rinse and repeat for some. If you choose to read about some of these events that were thwarted, you may note common factors: anger, idolizing the Columbine killers, well planned, and someone spoke up.
Unlike the shooting by a six year old who injured his teacher in Newport News in 2023 (trials in early 2026) and even at Columbine in 1999, in the links highlighting thwarted attempts, you will read of the people who spoke up and were believed.
But first:
If you do not know even the most well known facts on Columbine, the young man who warned as the event was unfolding, lets just say, he was not treated very nicely and the early warning signs were missed. These two articles are from shortly after the tragedy in 1999. Yesterday's news but planners of massscres idolize the two killers today.

When tragedy strikes through the violent forces of nature or at the hands of violent people, the phrase "rescue and recovery" are paired.
Sometimes, though despite rescue efforts, it becomes recovery. The recovery phase is just that, recovering the dead.
Once it is determined that the chance of anyone surviving is next to zero, or all live victims are out of danger, the recovery phase begins.
Can you think of any events that very quickly advanced to the recovery stage? Some miracles do happen, someone may be found alive, but recovery usually involves body bags.
Let's see what ALEXA says: She says there are four stages when I asked about the definition of RECOVERY after a tragedy.
I asked her several times. She gave a few different answers but these four were the most common when I asked about the definition. On one of her responses, hope was in stage 4.

The media generally picks up the feed in the Rescue stage, sometimes in real time. The words in rescue scenarios can not always be expressed, other times the sounds are heartbreaking.
We have all needed help at one time or the other. But have we all needed to be rescued?

ALEXA says it is to save or free someone from danger, confinement or evil. ALEXA used the word evil, YT did too.
I am not sure if the YT video threw in some 2026 political stuff, but danger is part of the definition.
People who rescue others are called heroes, because many times, the rescuers put their own lives on the line. Some make their living as "rescuers". Others are "good samaritans".
Did you see the coverage of the young lifeguard who rescued a child from the fierce surf in southern California? He received well deserved recognition from President Trump. The young man did not expect that White House visit when he went into the waves that day. He was doing his job as a 16 year old lifeguard. He made a decision and the video below shows the rescue in action with a very experienced lifeguard explaining.
I lived at the New Jersey shore for many years. Not all heroic actions are so fortunate regardless of the age of the lifeguard.

The beach has many warning signs and whistles of warning especially during rough surf.
Storms are not always nature generated, some are caused by humans. Danger is iminent or active. Rescuers step in or are called.
The other day in a school in Virginia, seventh graders stepped in to rescue their teacher from an attacker. They did not prevent the attack, but they intervened and rescued. The teacher was stabbed, but not mortally wounded. The students subdued the attacker until professional rescuers arrived.
Per this interview of the Sheriff, the school was not locked down because the attack was isolated. The reporter said the teacher needed stitches. Per the report, it is not the attacker's first juvenile offense.
Anyone going to the next public school board meeting at Jonesville Middle School? Just curiously asking.
The Sheriff is a bit non chalant to me. What do you think? I asked ALEXA what she thought of an incident when a student stabs a teacher. ALEXA answered it is a serious situation with multiple layers. My AI friend added a few protocols that would follow.

Who is on first?
The school year is just underway and already the national and international news has called out a few failures in prevention.
"ALEXA told me this morning that PREVENTION means the act of stopping something from happening or effectively hindering it. I asked three time just to be certain!
I then asked her what INTERVENTION means. She said it is the act of stepping in or interferring in to change a situation, often to improve it, or prevent worsening.
PREVENTION is proactive per ALEXA and INTERVENTION is reactive. One is stepping in before, like safety drills, the other involves deployment of resources.
It appears ALEXA and I agree on the definitions.
She compared the two but asked me if I wanted more information on how it applies to healthcare ( with a slant to vaccines?), education and safety. So I asked about school safety.
Prevention in school safety she said again is proactive. She mentioned, among other things, a trained staff to see warning signs and physical steps like locked doors, behavior programs and regular threat assessment. In the key ingredients she also mentioned community and a supportive school environment for students to report. I would add a safe community environment for teachers to report.
Intervention in school safety per ALEXA involves clear crisis plan, immediate lockdown protocols, counseling, rapid response, securing school doors, and restoring normalcy. These items are not in order and are not exclusive.
There is overlap in prevention and intervention. But prevention does not include rescue and recovery, intervention does.
ALEXA advised, when asked about the most important PREVENTION part of school safety, that it involves staff and students in communicating! She then advised that the "cornerstone" in INTERVENTION is rapid threat assessment that kicks off the school protocol.
So far, one teacher stabbed in a school in Virginia, a school shooting in the Philippines (second in less than two months) and a college that said all clear but later found a suspect hidng in a dorm closet.

I have watched the movie twice now. I need to watch movies multiple times, and with closed caption on in order to tune into the details especially with "who dun its?"
In a previous post I recommended the movie. Why? Originally, I tuned in because of the lead, Hugh Jackman. But then, while watching it with the youngest generation, it took on a new meaning.
Concerned at first for the little ones because it is a murder mystery, I watched faces. Interest, concern, tears were all part of the watching process, and that was only me! The children were totally engaged and cared too.
I would not say that the movie has a happy ending, but the mystery is solved and the legacy continues. It is a joyful movie with moving parts.
Did the movie company, by accident, use a Biblical story? I am not sure of that but today at Mass, the opening song inspired me to write this post and made me once again want to discuss the movie's influence, impact or take aways. If you watched it, did you see any connections to commonly known Bible stories?
I had a college professor who would not have liked the personification of animals. She would say that if a story is about humans, use human characters. The metaphors may have been missed if the script writers did not use sheep. We compare humans to animals all the time. I do not remember my professor's take on that.
In the movie, the shepherd loved his sheep and they in turn, loved him. He rescued and protected them from harm. He rescued a black sheep who was willing to lay down his life for his friends. The shepherd left a legacy for others to follow in his footsteps.
I make connections for life. Lay down and rest. Change some hearts? Take a break from the news.

This photo copy was given as a gift to my husband ( long before the divorce). I felt so moved by it, that I also got copies. I gave one to a friend at our library so many years ago. She stopped and looked at it intently. Her daughter had just adopted a lamb.

On some days, I look at the picture of the Sacred Heart in my apartment, and ask; Was I on the right path in 1998? I have said many times, I have not met a burning bush, but God does know how to reach me. The news, homilies, and an occasional cat are primary channels! Once, long before I wrote my workshop request, a Deacon pointed to several of us during the homily and said "You are a lamb of God." We were all very active at the Parish. Well we do know what happened to the real Lamb of God, so I took notice.
It was that year the "fan" became covered with the proverbial stuff. Following Jesus is not always an easy task. Prayer and listening are musts!
I listen to daily Mass most days. Today was no different, so I turned on YT to televised Masses, one from America and one from Canada. Today I was just prepared to "get it over with", especially the homily. But as usual when I take the laisse fair attitude about the homily, the Priests steps up to the plate.
Canada has different holidays and sometimes intentions at Mass then we do in America. August 10 in Canada is Prisoner's Justice Day. As the priest opened the Mass, he talked about the significance of the day. I was prepared to be annoyed or underwhelmed.
I am not soft on crime. I believe in Justice and Mercy. Justice I believe needs to come first. I am not sorry to see people get life in prison for crimes. The one reason I wrote against the death penalty in NJ was not because of the guilty, but because of the innocent without due process given. I am not really sorry to see the criminal taken down because there are NO victimless crimes.
With the most recent school shooting trial in Georgia then the most recent school shooting by a 14 year old in Thailand, "a that's ok honey homily", would have made me sick because I do not follow a wimpy God. Jesus only offered paradise to one of the thieves.
The priest's homily talked about restorative justice for the victims. He said how whole communities are impacted by crime. We see how a whole nation is impacted by crimes.
The priest did not ignore the prisoner's plight, but his words did not excuse the crimes. The homily is worth a listen so I am sharing.
Pray always. It is true if we pray for our enemies, we can not hate them. I am proof positive of that. Does it mean that I forget? Obviously I do not. Forgive and forget is nonsense. We have to remember to warn or help others or prevent other crimes.
One of the greatest takes for me from 1998, besides how God sees the bigger picture and gives us pieces of the puzzle, is that he is a God of Justice and Mercy.
Do not be fooled by the ignorant.
Be a lamb of action!

The news out of Thailand the other day is really just a tiny blip on the American news radar. But reactions to blame all gun owners is trending in Thailand, a typical response.
Will they blame America? Some do now, just like with the recent Tacloban shooting. One thing people should be able to rule out is white supremacy. Does acting locally have an impact globally? It must, but countries need to assume responsibility of their own and not always blame America. Thailand is not necessarily without its own sins. Think child sex trade.
So what are some common denominators of this shooter with other young killers?
Possible family issues, the shooter per news reports, lived with his grandparents. Where were the parents? The father apologized and was brought in for questioning. The dead grandparents can only speak through autopsies and other voices now.
Rumors of bullying, the ultimate excuse for seeking vengeance. Many of those reports get denied or found to be not really true. As I have stated before, I am tired of that excuse.
Interest, working knowledge, and access to the gun. Per reports, he used his grandfather's gun. He was 14. What existing gun laws were broken?
Reported history of bringing an airgun to school previously. Hmm.
Dead shooter's reports come out pretty fast after they kill themselves. Will they find a manifesto, interest in internet violence, dysfunction, or any other factor such as stories wriitten, warnings to friends? Is the father a CIA operative for those blaming MK Ultra for these things?
Caught on video. Isn't anyone manning the cameras in a school? Or is it just AI and an operation to take away guns and not another angry person set on vengeance?
As I told a lawyer years ago, I was seeking answers. My quest began with prevention and intervention. I already knew then that rescue and recovery were about dead ends.
The school year has begun in America. What are you going to do locally? Even though American news brushed it off, this school shooter had an impact globally.
It is interesting how the media shows up and yet the truth still can get buried. Did you see the amount of cameras at the school after the shooting?
A recent sentencing trial of the school shooter in Georgia who was 14 years old at the time of his crime not only was provided the guns but he had unfettered access to very dark information on the web. Parenting 101, monitor your children.
I know the choir reads my posts. If you do not want to speak up, share the information. Maybe you might just share with someone who has some influence such as an answer to the question, who is manning the cameras at your child's school or are the cameras active?
Be concerned about the kids your children talk or complain about.
Maybe you can wake someone up if bullying is a primary cause factor. Do not wait for the revenge stage to kick in.

Begin a topic of conversation with the parents of your children's friends or school mates.
Do you ask about access to guns? Some questions are difficult, but not as devastating as the questions when burying a child.
