People who rescue others are called heroes, because many times, the rescuers put their own lives on the line. Some make their living as "rescuers". Others are "good samaritans".
Did you see the coverage of the young lifeguard who rescued a child from the fierce surf in southern California? He received well deserved recognition from President Trump. The young man did not expect that White House visit when he went into the waves that day. He was doing his job as a 16 year old lifeguard. He made a decision and the video below shows the rescue in action with a very experienced lifeguard explaining.
I lived at the New Jersey shore for many years. Not all heroic actions are so fortunate regardless of the age of the lifeguard.
The ocean, especially in a storm, can be unforgiving and a thief.

The beach has many warning signs and whistles of warning especially during rough surf.
Storms are not always nature generated, some are caused by humans. Danger is iminent or active. Rescuers step in or are called.
The other day in a school in Virginia, seventh graders stepped in to rescue their teacher from an attacker. They did not prevent the attack, but they intervened and rescued. The teacher was stabbed, but not mortally wounded. The students subdued the attacker until professional rescuers arrived.
Per this interview of the Sheriff, the school was not locked down because the attack was isolated. The reporter said the teacher needed stitches. Per the report, it is not the attacker's first juvenile offense.
