Nate says, People Lie, Don't I know it

A flashback case is under the fold, but Nate found it. Any lessons on The Clery Act to be learned? Listen carefully, any connections to Cornell?

The headlines hurt this man.

What is said about the Cornell case, Nate?

https://youtu.be/4rWGg_24yk0?is=DTT354zD_Ezjyi-u

I wrote an "ASK"; spoke at microphones; wrote editorials; led a few workshops; got my book published; and started this blog because people lied.

People lie to get out of trouble which can cause more trouble. False accusations in my school case and divorce case ended with severed relationships but no dead people in either one. There are always collaterals but not necessarily big headlines. My story was not on page one.

I won both cases in courts of law. The constant news and lives of others, also prove, I wasn't the difficult one. Years later, does it matter?

Connections:

Take note: Children do not lie to get into trouble. But some information is troubling to adults. If a child advises of an assault, a kid at school who needs help, problems in the classroom, at lunch or recess, a weapon in a book bag, a bus driver going to fast...listen to the kid.

My highschoolers and I witnessed a bus accident in front of their high school circa 2004-2005. I can still see it after all these years. Some of my former second graders, Beautiful Butterflies and Courageous Cats, were on that bus. Teachers remember faces.

The bus driver was hurt. The history of the driver was investigated. A curb hit here, a curb hit there were discovered.

Kids know. They are not tattling, they are telling ahead of a major problem long before adults understand. The children are messengers.

Did you listen to the testimony out of Newport News? Do you think there are regrets at the school? Children did tell. They had fears but they spoke up. Adults held back until it was too late for the teacher. The kid holding the gun shot and seriously wounded her. A lifetime of damage to collaterals. $10 million pricetag paid to the one target. The gun jammed before more could be hit.

Living life under the fold, after surviving above the fold and under the flag is not easy.

Why do people lie? Assaults come in all shapes and sizes and formulations. "Happiness is a warm gun", did you read that post?

Where do all the flowers go? Peter, Paul and Mary asked. When will we ever learn?

How do lies get to be told in lawsuits?

Do our children have to be soldiers in our schools?

I asked a long time ago for a workshop. I will not stop because-

The truth always comes out. Jesus is not a liar.

What if? Thinking before shots are fired?

…I hope Bend, Oregon is thinking "What if?"

I took a side trip in thoughts to get to this post. The previous post went on an adventure. It led me to write this one. A lovely Hallmark Christmas movie inspired this title.

Are the people of Bend, thinking, "What if?" I bet a few are.

You can not go back but you can change the trajectory of a predictable event? No, you say? Some online groups say future proves past. You find all sorts of voices online.

Only morons ( and defense lawyers)  think school shootings do not follow predictable patterns. Read these news articles. They may help in stopping the next foreseeable attempt. See Back to the Future post.

No manifestos in the Bend, Oregon shooting to FOIA?

Journalists must be asking questions. Can you connect dots? Are authorities holding more news conferences? Per Alexa, the Governor of Oregon spoke today, October 26, 2026 post mortem.

Two passing by in vehicles had thoughts on October 15, 2026 that crossed their minds when someone with a gun crossed their paths. One, per news reports, asked a question and called 911. His spidey senses were active as his car took bullets.

One passer by stopped and fired shots. Lots of news articles. He thought it could be his last live action. He wasn't wrong to think that. (See other posts.) He was the "Spiderman" who stopped the bad guy. This bad guy can not kill again.

Hopefully, the father, who helped, won't have to be in a sequel like the one mother of a student in the school. Two school shootings in one lifetime?

What would prequels tell? Does art imitate life or the reverse? Yes, see posts on Law and Order.

I have two HUGE questions and observations.

Why was the father who entered, with good intent, not shot when the police arrived... and then allowed to leave the building? It seems odd unless the narrative is deceptive. The kids had to wait to leave. He went home? What actions did he present to the police? I am sure if I am asking, someone else has similar thoughts.

Is he called a vigilante? Thankfully, per the news, he was vigilant, as was the red truck driver. We know some of his thoughts. I pray he finds peace in his thoughts and never has to kill to save a life again.

Do you know that the school district is getting  all sorts of money now? Negative attention will do that. The Governor acts in this article. Is D.D. of Columbine infamy offering help? Copy and paste the article below and see Rewarded for Failures on this blog.

Does the mother of the shooter have second thoughts? The shooter's dad does. Reporters found him.  Hopefully, no book tours for either one.

https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2026/10/father-of-bend-school-shooter-is-homeless-in-astoria.html

What if online groups were involved? Yes, the investigators are thinking. Nothing new in that thought process. Read about Eddie Werner's death by his neighbor or Colt Gray's shooting in a school on this blog.

https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2026/10/fbi-probes-16-year-old-bend-shooters-online-radicalization-apparent-nazi-obsession.html

Are there any other questions or What ifs?  I formed some. Has this one been said outloud yet? If the past is any indication in the school shooting autopsies, it will be spoken for legal reasons. Police may be asking already.:

The hardest "What if " is to ask an actual shooting victim. In the seconds, after the shots were fired into the first set of doors, ugh, was a door opened that facilitated the opportunity to kill in the classroom? What is trained protocol?

Read the information coming from the teacher's aid who was seriously wounded, but not killed.

She will be obligated to answer in an inquiry and court of law. It helps to remember.

Scarlet, the lawyers will not give a damn whether the staff member is seriously injured, mentally and physically. So do not shout at me as being harsh.

See previous posts on the testimony by Abby Zwerner in the civil and criminal trials out of the Newport News shooting in 2023. The Colt and Colin Gray trials explain also,

I do hope the parents file lawsuits and keep them public.

What if the mother of the shooter had watched the trial of Colin Gray? Colt Gray? How about the Crumbly's, Ethan's mom and dad? Is a life sentence for their boys comforting? At least prison allows visits.

What if parents did not buy people, with documented mental health issues, guns?

What if the SRO was at the school? It does seem the assigned ones were off campus in many of the schools when the lock downs started.

What if, what if, what if?

Are you ASKing?

What if the Spirits gave a word of warning? Ask before. Thoughts and prayers are good for prevention before rescue, recovery and regrets wreck the present and future. How about before a deep dive into the past?

How costly are missed warning signs?

 The 40-million-dollars?

(Originally published on April 22, 2024, edited and updated November 7, 2025.)

A young teacher, who also suffered from depression before the shooting, filed a lawsuit against the school district after she was shot and seriously injured by her first-grade student, who was 6 years old.

It was January 6, 2023.

She survived and sued for $40 million. The jury awarded the amount of  $10 million.

There are questions the lawsuit answered. Mainstream media covered this failure to protect.

A grand jury also has indicted the assistant principal, and the mother of the boy has received jail time.

The gun jammed; otherwise, per the Grand Jury report, the teacher may have been killed.  The children in the class could have suffered physical injuries in addition to the emotional trauma if the gun had not malfunctioned.

This is not a gun control issue. It is, though, about people not doing their jobs. The testimony revealed the missteps and failures.

The civil court case was decided by a jury on November 6, 2025, but not before the female defense attorney of the vice principal did her best to throw the young teacher under the proverbial bus.  Next up is the criminal trial against the vice principal.  I hope the defendant gets the "book thrown at her."

It was clear from the testimony that the teacher may not have understood she had the required permission to search the child. But per the chain of command, as many understand it in a school, the staff went to the vice principal. The rest is history.

In 2025, the defense lawyer said "unthinkable" and "unprecedented" in the questioning and closing arguments. She must still be living under a rock.

Resources that I use to write.

How would you like your classroom remembered?  In a violent time, real questions deserve real answers.

40 million dollar failure...The jury thought it was worth 10 million for the teacher. I am happy she won.  Her life will never be the same.

My book, Stopping School Violence One Teacher's Silent Scream, describes my concerns and actions in 1998.

What would you have done?

Compare and contrast.  My principal was a Peter Principal also. It was a struggle to get my coworkers to understand that prevention is worth a pound of cure-- or at least $10 million dollars worth.
