A boy, a gun, a father and Cher

Except for the OJ trial many years ago, I am not one to watch live trials of murderers.  I do keep informed through news. I temper the brutality of real life with calming books or loving movies.

That is why I am having a hard time finishing Frozen River a contempory novel with a historical setting. As I noted in an earlier post, the author must have used current, front page headlines for motivation. Nothing is calming in this "who dun it" with #MeToo side bars. No comedy, just dramatic, difficult reading.

Front page headlines on TV, radio, YT or print media catch our attention. It is impossible to scroll without seeing bad news. Some bad news becomes real life Law and Order episodes.

So since November of 2025, I have watched a few live trials that are related to school violence. The bad guys are kids who pulled a trigger with the addition of truly dysfunctional parents. The victims are kids, adults and entire communities.

I will post more on the most recent trial of a boy who diabotically planned a school shooting. Dysfunction and the dark web of the True Crime Community of Discord helped lead this boy to perdition. But first:

Cher!

Since I was very young in the early 1960's, I knew of Cher. My sister had her early albums. Cher was kind of folksy when she started. As an adult, I have not only listened to Cher but watched her on the little and big screens. I was never interested in reading her words.

But...

Our book club selection this month was Cher, The Memoir Part One, not my choice. I read it this week at the same time two sentencing trials were televised about the Apalachee High School  shooting on September 4, 2024. Yesterday's news in headlines this week.

Connecting dots:

Cher had a dysfunctional upbringing. Her mother had more men in and out of her house and bed than "Carter's had liver pills". Cher's father(s) were multiple yet she called only one man "daddy". Cher hated school, was very independent, and at a young, "jail bait age" became involved with a much older, very controlling man. His name was Sonny Bono. She was exposed to darkness as a child and as an adult.

Cher may have bizarre life to most of us, but she is living a productive life and a loving one. She was not always paid in kind. She made us laugh while she was crying. Comics often do that since they are actors at heart.

Why did Cher grow up to be a success and another child, years later, at about the same age of Cher when she struck out on her own, plan and execute a massacre?

These are questions to ask, ponder and answer for prevention of violence.

The book was telling of Cher and the trials were telling of the school shooter from Georgia.

Cher talked about faith and forgiveness in her book. And, she was imperfectly loved. Cher loves too. How was that heart fostered to grow into a successful, loving person and mother? Some may call her quirky!

Why did a troubled child, identified in his early school years, as having problems, grow into a hate filled person obsessed with carrying out murder and who will now spend a lifetime in jail without parole?

Why?

If you work with humans, the Why? is a connection because that means you are aware and asking. Asking saves kids.

I conducted a workshop with youth in a detention center. I titled it "Making Lemonade." I would include her book in that workshop if I led it today.

If you remember "Laverne", you may like to read about Cher and her resilent nature. Be prepared for name dropping but also for a lesson.

Resiliency is often identified as a trait in people who have overcome trauma at any age, but especially in those who have experienced trauma at a young age.

More dots:

School violence prevention is not a mystery. The school shooters tell us before and after they are successful bringing death and destruction. Thank goodness their victims respond with wanting justice, and not revenge.

Through her life with many potholes, Cher did not drink much or do drugs. Why not, she had every opportunity? She took care of her family.

Most people who have working knowledge and access to guns do not commit murder. Why do a small percentage plan evil and get to execute the plan while most who own guns, even youthful ones, succeed in productive lives?

Look for the resilent people to help prevent school violence.

Pay attention. Ask questions.

The handwriting is on the wall and sometimes you may find an interesting piece of the prevention puzzle in a surprising book that you did not really want to read. Cher writes from experience.

Have you read my book? It may surprise you. Asking saves kids.  Come to think of it, why haven't you learned about a piece of the puzzle I used? I write from experience and legal documentation.

Connecting dots saves lives too.

Next up, trial testimony. Stay tuned.

Should you get your law degree before teaching?

Yes and No!

If teachers were lawyers, billable hours would kill the budget. But teachers, not meant to be lawyers, are ignorant of the law. It can be a trap or, let someone, like the VP at Newport News, ignore some vital aspects of school safety and see how much you should know.

This blog tries to educate using many voices.

My book explains in detail, what I knew and did to protect my class. Read it for educational purposes. If you are  afraid to speak up or lacking faith, also read it for strength.

I have been posting follow up since I wrote the book because, after watching a few school related trials this year,  I see that ignorance abounds and has been anything but blissful from elementary school to the university level.

If you read my book, you will be able to connect dots to these videos from 2020. How many school shootings since 2020? How many since 1998? I have lost count. Gun control advocates have not. Do you want another law breaker to take more rights away, including the right to be safe on campus?  Do you want the educational staff and personnel who care for your kids to use ignorance as an excuse? Ignorance is not a legal defense.

These links showed up in my feed today. Thanks Google. Think prevention.

The individual links about myths are below the first one.

Myths explained; Hmm. Connect dots to my book.

From the main website. This is not an endorsement of the company but it does have some ideas when working with IDEA.

What you do not know can kill you or your child.

As I am writing this, a trial is starting in Georgia on Court TV. A toddler is dead at the hands of a mother.  The mother was a high school teacher at the time of the child's death. A boyfriend factors in. That does happen too. I may post links on that in the near future. From CK to this child, Karter, our schools have an obligation to keep people safe. Who is teaching in our schools and college campuses?  Innocent until proven guilty.  Child assault prevention, not rescue and recovery.

Justice, we know, can take years to come to trial.

Ignorance is not bliss. Let us pray, that the lawyers and administrators, not only know the law, but follow it.

Teenaged Angst Sometimes a Jury or Judge has to decide

I recently watched an episode of Freaks and Geeks. It was frustrating to watch this long ago (and maybe forgotten) comedy/drama, aka soap opera, work through the story lines. It was a popular series when my children were younger.

What the actors show, as irritating as it is, is that teenagers make bad decisions and parents and teachers can be clueless and ineffective. Some of the actors have become famous, one rather infamous. This all white cast performed behaviors demonstrating some intelligence, a little wisdom, bullying, mean girls, hormones off the rails, criminal behavior, docile mother, some good parenting moments due to listening and availibility, promiscuity, violent parenting, and some reconciliation or remorse. Conflict was the theme, friends who make wrong decisions and lying.

If you have been a parent, teacher or  a teenager at any time, or currently serving in those roles, watch one episode. If it doesn't cause some sort of visceral reaction, then, well, you are Clueless (of which mean girls are stars.) Laughter is visceral, but I did not laugh.

Even Hallmark has teenage angst. Most characters do not visbibly drive recklessly, egg houses or show someone beating friends and enemies, school yard extortion, or death.  Girls can be mean though, maybe not as well acted as in Freaks and Geeks.

Does Hallmark Murders and Mysteries show any school violence story lines?

Teenage angst on the screen is one thing, in real life it can be deadly. In Freak and Geeks one episode is as angsty as the next but no body died of anything but embarassment in the episode.

Since I deal with school violence discussions, I try to write related to school aged issues. Although quite frankly, I absolutely understand how adults in schools can make deadly decisions. Sometimes their deadly decisions are because of what they have done, others, because, of what they have failed to do.

I post links to podcaster commentaries.

The KA trial is currently trending on the social media sites. Everyone has an opinion, even long after juries have rendered verdicts. Some opinions are based in fact, some spin cloth.

A lot of the banter, in the KA drama, draw on lines of color. The stories tell: lies, partial truths, conjecture, wisdom, details, generalizations, and perceptions. The truth is that someone died at the hands of another. Not everyone knows the truth except the teenager who drew the weapon. He did not speak under oath so lawyers do their interviews after the fact.

The KA supporters have brought in the race card. And, as a result brought in a court case involving a white, 18 year old teenaged adult to compare and contrast fairness. They may be comparing one type of apple to another. Two apples raised in different environments but eventually making deadly decisions. Bad decisions by said apples can spoil the whole lot.

The script in trials is often well rehearsed and the story boards are not original.

Listen to the commentators. The settings of these two real life dramas are school scenes located in Texas. The scenarios involve fighting, death,  knives, challenges, victims, perpetrators, witnesses, trials, media, mothers, fathers, and self defense arguments. I see dead students, do you?

As you listen, compare the decisions of all the characters, then back track. "Rewind" to what the students (all of them) could have and should have done before knives were plunged into the hearts of another. Hindsight review may help someone tomorrow with yesterday's news as a backdrop. None of the past should be rewritten by anyone.

Although any angsty behavior or commentary will not bring the dead back to life, and no rewrite is possible for the two dead teenagers, the two in jail could write chapters that turn their current stories into a happier ending. Maybe appeals will help change their current housing arrangements but will it change their hearts that are still beating?

Hopefully, the adults will keep their commentary peaceful and the parents base their claims in reality. Lawyers are lawyers, they will argue either side depending on who is signing the paycheck. (Ask a lawyer on that, they train to argue both sides.)

The summary of the CA case does explain school protocol. In my opinion, school safety protocol in an emergency was not followed in the KA case. Listen to the reporters following the CA case. Less angst by reporters in the CA case than from the KA case which was covered by many podcasters.

Belton High School and Frisco High School are on the list of failures and two mothers added to the  lists which they are now part of because of deadly actions by their sons. Two other mothers on another list because of actions against their sons.

Both teenagers found guilty.  No winneres. No one called for race wars in the CA case, although the victim was hispanic and the  convicted murderer is white.

The KA parents and handlers went public. A gag order was put into place because of the pre-trial rhetoric. Fundraisers and money became a flashpoint for KA.

I had not heard of the CA case before the KA supporters brought it to attention.  Self defense? Unfair trial? Why compare? Some have odd ways of handling conflict.

Some pondered how the CA case would impact the KA trial. I wonder how the CA case that happened in May 2022 did not have an impact sooner than a trial in June 2026.

https://youtu.be/kHAVcGzofWc?is=RrKqLOv2-jxjmWhp

CA trial was in April 2025. KA used the knife on April 2. 2025.

Some murderers never have to face a jury, they get killed or committ suicide All dead victims can not tell their sides. School related deaths are always suspect to me, even with videos.

Sentences, 10 years, 35 years. Knives kill. Juries discern and decide. Parents weep.

No one is advocating for knife laws although some are arguing the size of the knife and the right to carry one. Weapons are not allowed on school campuses by law.

Do the research on these cases. Draw your own conclusions. Hopefully, you are not blind to teenage angst.

Unalive means dead.

Both convicted murders brought knives to school and used them to kill someone. There ought to be a law.

Both CA and KA have appeal in waiting.

Everyone has opinions.

Kids are dead and they died on school property.  Evidently, the Golden Rule is interpreted differently by the main characters. What would Columbo do?

The Log

I really think Google can read our thoughts or the algorithm picked up on a podcaster's prayer.

The Bible Scripture passage came to my mind this morning about taking the log out of our own eyes before removing the splinter from someone else's eye.

It entered my thoughts in 1998 on school violence prevention and then again this morning after listening to a podcaster who opens with prayer. I like her openings. She is a recent find due to the AK trial. She was in the courtroom during the trial. No link is here for her, but I bet I will share one in the future.

These two links are about a death that happened in 2019. One victim. Two teenagers in jail. The weapon was not a gun or knife. The scene was an Ohio park. School event.

Connect dots to the AK situations. Do you see the patterns, beside dead people?

Listen to the news report, then listen to the podcasters commentary. I know nothing of these podcasters. They use expletives but we are all adults. They do not race bait. It is common sense commentary.

Mothers reactions: Compare to the mother of AK. Same? Denial? Unbelief? Anger stage of grief?

My book explains how the mother reacted to my concerns in prevention. We can all be in denial about our own kids. That could be a deadly choice.

These kids took a plea deal which is what many thought AK should have been guided to do. This 2020 plea deal did not result in calls for vengeance on anyone else. Unfortunately, the same can not be said of the reactions to the outcome of the AK trial.

News report: I do remember this case. Not a school setting, but teenagers. Names are given and ages 17.

Ohio teens get 3 years for rolling log off cliff ‘to be funny,’ killing photographer taking portraits below – KIRO 7 News Seattle https://share.google/a0ZX1VBFATavlWeCN

The podcasters: Interview of the killers. No faces blotted out. The commentary is important.

Per the time on this post, it says 4 days ago but the events are from 2019 to 2020. Masks in some segments for Covid. (That to me shows a problem.)

https://youtu.be/k_xTi1J5oeM?is=VFFmLhoHvb3CBeZ8

I hope this helps people understand. Prevention is worth a pound of cure. Any calls for banning logs?

What chya gonna do when a gun comes to school? Could have, Would have, Should have

I really do not think that I was the only teacher during the 1997-1998 school year to believe that a kid would bring a gun to school.  But in my district, then, it sure seemed like it. 1996 to 1998 were not quiet years in schools when it came to gun violence, especially in “unexpected” school districts. I was cognizant of behavior patterns and access to weapons. And I knew we were not some special immune district. I did work with humans after all.

I may have been unique in questioning administration though, well at least in my district. My book does detail the responses from parents and teachers. The parents wrote letters, so did certain staff. The correspondence is telling. What I wrote about teachers’ insight would be, at least in a court of law, considered hearsay at least in Newport News, Va. But, after my workshop request addressed to particular staff, no one could fain ignorance. They could all have been called on in a trial to speak for themselves. I listed them in my legal endeavor.

In almost every incidence of violence in a school setting (not only gun violence), one will hear naive statements, and often, “the safety and well being of the students is the top priority” right after the damage had been done.

If a trial is held, defense lawyers outright lie, using terms like unprecedented, unthinkable, unpredictable, “who would ever think a young child would bring a gun?”. Then you hear could, would and should. The lawyer in the recent dismissed trial of the VP liked "could and should", except when it came to his client. Her defense lawyer in the civil trial, which the VP lost, used “unthinkable" and unpredictable.

What is unthinkable and unpredictable after a students tells you?

So, in this blog post, I have listed 12 videos or news stories that discuss what happens after a kid brings a gun to school.  Don’t let the naive and stupid; administrators trying to save face; or a lawyer offering bs lines to protect (the people who did nothing or failed to be proactive) get away with ignorant statements. Be proactive. If you need examples, share these videos or this post.

It is almost summer, with school heading to seasonal breaks. You should have time to review. The oldest link is 18 years old. They are not in any order but all are related to children under 12 years old. These are American schools but violence in a school is not unique to America.

Remember, you could be the one with a needed puzzle piece. What would you do to prevent a violent attack in your school? After the fact, the law will be made clear to you about what should have been done.

In almost of these scenarios, children warned the staff who took action. Those children must have held more clout then the children under VP, EP  in the now infamous elementary school in Newport News, Va.

New gun laws also would not help. Gun laws were broken in these scenarios.
